With violent crime falling, Whitmire, Jackson Lee have plenty else to talk about in Houston mayor’s race (Editorial)

The County is collaborating with the City of Houston’s “One Safe Houston” program for the program that will offer gift cards in exchange for both working and non-working firearms. The weapons will be destroyed unless they come up in a database that they were stolen or used in a crime.
The question is: Are we past that now that violent crime numbers are coming down in Houston and nationally? Violent crime went down 12 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to one year earlier Still, we’re hoping that falling numbers of murders and other violent crimes free up some oxygen in the Houston mayor’s race, and other contests, to talk about other issues that also affect quality of life: illegal dumping, trash pickup, affordable housing, climate responsibility, to name a few.
“We need to be smart on crime,” Jackson Lee told us. “But I can see on the horizon the attempt to make crime such a mountain of fear in the minds and hearts of Houstonians that the quality of life issues that are so necessary may have a challenge.”
