Kanye West, the rapper who now goes by the name Ye, unleashed a series of anti-Semitic posts last month. More recently, basketball star Kyrie Irving tweeted a link to a anti-Semitic film that, among other things, calls the Holocaust a lie.
We saw vivid evidence of that reach in Los Angeles, where a banner was placed above a freeway that read: “Kanye is right about the Jews.” Or as Corey D.B. Walker, who will soon assume the post of interim dean of the Wake Forest School of Divinity, says: “We’re in a moment where public discourse is deeply impoverished.”
The film Irving linked is unartfully built around the not-new movement of Black people who claim to descend from the tribes of Israel. Walker recommends Judith Weisenfeld’s 2018 book, “New World A-Coming: Black Religion and Racial Identity during the Great Migration,” and the research of University of Pennsylvania scholar John L. Jackson into Black Hebrew Israelites.
