. Between 2003 and 2021, time spent alone has steadily increased from 43.5% to 50.5% for the average American. It’s even more stark when you discount the people who live in your own house: In the same 18-year period, time spent with people we don’t cohabitate with plunged from 21.9% to 14.1%. Love it or hate it, the ever-more prolific fast food drive-through reflects the reality that we’re just not hanging out as much anymore.
Then again, most fast food restaurants have never really been bastions of community or idyllic places to gather. Maybe it’s more fun to smash crispy-salty food alone in the car with music blasting, instead of hunched over on a hard plastic chair under the aggressively fluorescent lights of your local fast food restaurant. Now, in the instances wehanging out, it’s in restaurants more intentionally designed for lingering, or at home on the couch with friends and a bag of takeout.
When you take into account the urban exodus, pandemic labor shortages, and an increase in solo time, it makes sense that the drive-through is thriving right now. Whether the concept seeps beyond fast food remains to be seen. But for the foreseeable future? Catch you in the parking lot—avoiding eye contact and eating our limp little nuggets in the car.
