Two years after a blaze destroyed most of Lytton, residents were once again on alert this week.
On Friday, the Kookipi Creek wildfire, about 24 km south of Lytton, was burning about 88 square kilometres, and the Stein Mountain fire, about 20 km north of the village, was estimated at almost 6.4 square kilometres.
Current Lytton Mayor Denise O’Connor said people are “hunkered down” in the village’s 35 or so remaining homes, with their bags packed, waiting for further updates, alerts and orders. Every direction she looked from her home, the sky was full of smoke. “Everybody is traumatized from the fire that we had in Lytton that burned the town two years ago,” Phillips said Friday. As of Friday, communities from the Lytton, Skuppah and Boothroyd First Nations had been evacuated, said Oregon Jack Creek First Nation Chief Matt Pasco, who chairs the Nlaka’pamux Nation Tribal Council.
