The “Acorn Hill Wildfire” was reported in an area of Brendan T. Byrne State Forest.
Glassworks Trail, Coopers Road and several local state forest roads were closed and “several structures” in the forest’s campground were being threatened by the wildfire, officials said.
A spokesman with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said additional details on the wildfire were not immediately available but would be posted online. “Forest Fire Service crews are utilizing a backfiring operation to burn fuel ahead of the main body of fire,” officials said The agency defines a “backfire” as a fire “intentionally set along the interior edge of a fireline by Forest Fire Service staff to consume fuel in the path of a wildfire and/or to change the direction of force of a fire’sResidents were reminded by the DEP not to fly drones near fire zones as it can interfere with first responders.
The service that smoke from the fire is “expected to hang low to the ground and reduce visibility” overnight and during early morning hours.in New Jersey, part of what officials have described as a particularly busy wildfire season.
