A look at what the achievement gaps are between students of color and white students in Marion County schools, and what is being done about it.
The district has the largest achievement gap between its students of color and white students among all Marion county school districts.
“When we think about Brown v. Board of Education, which did not happen too long ago, and I think we forget that,” Buchanan-Rivera said. “We had students of color who entered predominately white spaces who were not able to be in environments where their authentic selves were celebrated.” Not all school districts in Marion County are the same size in terms of the student population and do not have the same racial demographics. Three of the districts – Decatur, Beech Grove and Speedway – have student populations under 7,000.
Washington Township does not have enough American Indian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander students to record their ILEARN results.Gwendolyn Kelley, who is the lead editor forcreated by the Indiana NAACP State Conference, said that there has been a historical failure in making equity and inclusion efforts a priority for state education.
Christopher Lubienski, the director of the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University, also pointed toward historical racial segregation problems in the U.S. which created segregation in schools that resulted in different outcomes for students.
