Despite The Expendables labeling its characters as, well, expendable, there’s a reason why the films have only killed one of the team’s members.
Throughout the soon-to-be four films of The Expendables series, it might surprise some viewers that only one main team member has ever died. After all, one would think that a group called the Expendables might be a bit more prone to embodying their namesake, but the films are quite reluctant to pull the trigger. In fairness, major character death in films and TV shows does need to be treated carefully.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Expendables franchise follows a cast of highly-trained mercenaries sent out on dangerous missions that others could not hope to survive. Sylvester Stallone writes and stars in the series, playing Barney Ross, as the four films pay homage to action blockbusters of the 80s and 90s while also celebrating past and present action heroes.
Additionally, showing the characters dying with relative frequency in The Expendables would also harm the premise of the group in the first place. This team is supposed to be the best of the best and at the top of their game, with the mythos of The Expendables and the cool, creative ways they manage to fight and survive time and time again bearing more narrative weight than actually examining death and grief.
The Expendables Couldn’t Risk Becoming A Tragedy As well as this, Stallone has said before that he doesn’t want The Expendables to be depressing, which he feared would cause people to lose interest in the story. This makes sense, given that audiences don’t typically see action movies for the catharsis of deep and sometimes uncomfortable emotions.
