According to pitch notes, Marvel's World War Hulk event was originally planned to introduce a new version of the Green Goliath - the Righteous Hulk. This ultra-powerful Hulk would have been the benevolent monarch of Earth after a successful invasion.

In-between the original outline and final version of World War Hulk, its most fascinating take on the character was cut. The original World War Hulk, first published in 2007, is still well-regarded by fans to this day and on his blog, Marvel editor Tom Brevoort revealed that the story was originally going to be much different; for a brief instant, the Hulk becomes a just ruler, in the process becoming the Righteous Hulk.

In a post on Brevoort’s blog, dated July 24th, 2008, he shared with readers what he believed to be a “third draft” of the event’s outline, which broke the story down over individual issues. In this draft, events still played out as they did in the final version: the Illuminati shoot the Hulk into space, sending him to a paradise world where he can live out the rest of his life in peace. Then, the rocket is thrown off course and lands on Sakaar, where the Hulk rises in ranks to become its leader.

The Righteous Hulk Could Be His Ultimate Form Brevoort pulls back the curtain on World War Hulk, giving fans a tantalizing glimpse at a road not taken–one that would have given the Marvel Universe a bold new vision of the Hulk. The Hulk as a wise and benign monarch seems as far as one can get from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s initial take on the character, but it shows readers just what the Hulk is capable of if others would stop hassling him.

This Is Not the First Time the Hulk Has Been a Ruler The thought of the Hulk ruling over a desert kingdom brings to mind another Hulk variant: the evil Maestro, first seen in the landmark Future Imperfect miniseries. In that book, the Maestro ruled with an iron fist, ruthlessly dispatching all of his opponents until none remained. Maestro remains a memorable, and chilling, depiction of the Hulk.
