In the past six years, over 85% of the giant sequoias that habitat the Sierra Nevada have been hit by wildfire. This is in comparison to just 25% in the previous century.
Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park, where the biggest sequoia trees in the world grow, has been protected by the government for more than 150 years.
Thick plumes of dark smoke that triggered air quality alerts over the entire region was reportedly seen as far north as Oregon. Despite flames being attacked from all angles, the Washburn Fire continues to expand. The giant sequoias attract thousands of tourists each year to the national park. They are known for being fire resistant, but park officials say even the trees have a limit.
