Mellody Hobson, the Co-CEO of Ariel Investments and a fervent proponent of financial literacy and inclusion, believes that the heart of the problem extends beyond just wage disparities:"The real issue is not the wage gap—it's the opportunity gap," Hobson said in a recentIndeed, the realization of equitable pay will only be achievable when equal opportunities are genuinely accessible across racial and gender divides.

While both genders enter the workforce in equal numbers, women of color are the most likely to stay in less senior positions. Of the 44 women represented in the Fortune 500, only five are women of color, and only two are Black women including Walgreen’s Roz Brewer and TIAA’s Thasunda Brown Duckett.Since the calculation relies on hourly earnings reported by employees, it fails to consider entrepreneurs and self-employed women.
