Even though it's December, the recent warmer temperatures have caused mosquitoes to hatch, to the annoyance of many Houstonians who thought they might get a break from the pests as the new year approaches.
According to Associate Certified Entomologist, the mosquitoes are just as annoying as they usually are and he isn't surprised at all people are seeing them in large numbers.
According to the Houston Health Department, mosquitoes lay eggs in ditches, ponds, tanks, and other areas where water collects. The eggs can remain in dry conditions for several months and after floods or heavy rains, the eggs hatch in only a few days, producing swarms of hungry mosquitoes. Another wave of mosquitoes occurs typically 10 to 14 days after the rains stop as well.
