Why are Afghan allies enduring a long wait to come to America? | Opinion
FILE - A group of children play inside one of the large tents at an Afghan refugee camp on Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst, N.J., on Sept. 27, 2021. Thousands of refugees who fled Afghanistan and now live in the United States are facing an uncertain future. Congress has failed so far to create a pathway to residency for Afghans who came to America after working alongside U.S. soldiers in the war.
I work as an immigration specialist with the International Rescue Committee, and I have watched the system fail too many deserving families. Between August 2021 and February 2022, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services approved onlyvisa applications from Afghans who didn’t make it onto an evacuation flight. Many of those who did make it out and into the U.S. were separated from their families and don’t have the immigration status to be able to apply for their spouse or children.
The 76,000 Afghans who were lucky enough to be airlifted out of Kabul received a special legal status called humanitarian parole. Afghans like Abdul’s family, who reside outside of America, could be given the same status. USCIS says it’s processing applications, but then we hear nothing. We’re given no interview date, no updates of any kind. The prior administration dramatically cut the USCIS budget and staff, leaving many positions unfilled. Today, the limited staff is overwhelmed.
