Just in time for grape stomping season, a Temecula author publishes a book that explains wineries in southern Riverside County.
September, Temecula’s traditional grape harvest month, has been good to Rob Crisell. He has just sold two tons of syran from his vineyard, and he has a new book coming out.
In a phone interview, he said Temecula is unique due to the large numbers of varietals that are grown there — roughly 40 — and the tourism experience it provides. Temecula resident Rob Crisell shows off his vineyard in Temecula. grape growing in the Temecula Valley area. “The way we know those wineries is the way those wines are distributed to us through our supermarkets or wine clubs. But Temecula doesn’t distribute. People come to Temecula for the winery experience as much as for the wine. It has really led to a more vibrant, more user-friendly wine country than those other places.”
Crisell said he started researching Temecula wineries for a book in 2015 but it got pushed to the back burner by his other interests. He started making wine from his own grapes, got a Level 3 certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, and resumed researching the wineries around him.
