Will he stay or will he go?
Houston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander walks back to the dugout after striking out Oakland Athletics designated hitter Shea Langeliers to end the top of the fifth inning at Minute Maid Park on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022 in Houston. As he wraps up a Cy Young Award-worthy season at 39 years old, Justin Verlander has been pretty mum about his future. Still, a decision looms., making him a free agent after getting paid $25 million this season as he returned from Tommy John surgery.
There’s no big surprise who the favorites are to land Verlander if he leaves: Yankees , Mets and Dodgers . The Yankees are always major players in free agency and already took Gerrit Cole from the Astros when they gave him the largest contract ever for a pitcher at nine years, $324 million. The Mets are expected to be free-spenders, especially if they lose deGrom. The Dodgers also have plenty of money and could be looking to replace Clayton Kershaw this offseason.
BetOnline also has the Atlanta Braves as a candidate at 5-to-1 and the Angels at 7-to-1. From there, the odds get a bit longer with the Phillies and Rangers both at 9-to-1 and the Blue Jays, Giants and Padres all at 10-to-1. The online sportsbook has the Astros in the mix for both Judge and deGrom. It seems unlikely the Astros would be willing to pay Judge the $40 million a year he likely seeks, no matter how many home runs he hits past the 60 he already has this season. Nevertheless, BetOnline gives the Mets , Giants and Dodgers the best odds of landing Judge, if he leaves the Yankees, and the Astros next in line at .
