Many cities in the eastern United States have gotten very little snow in December and January this winter season. And the trend may continue for a while.

. “We are very late for our first inch of snow compared to normal.”

What is the main culprit behind the city’s meager snow totals this winter? Williams says temperatures have been on the warmer side compared to normal. “For the Boston area, the cold air came in after the rain. The precipitation moved out and the cold air came in,” Williams noted. “We haven’t had the occurrence of the cold and the wet at the same time.”

By the second week of January, Newark usually has a total of 8 inches of snow in the weather books, New York City usually has 7.3 inches, Philadelphia normally has 5.4 inches and Atlantic City typically has 5 inches.
