Takeaways and observations from the Rockets' preseason loss to the Heat on Monday night.

MIAMI — The Rockets got the test they wanted from their trip to Miami. They just did not get it from the players they expected to give it to them.
Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. combined for 46 points and 11 assists while Tari Eason had his third double-double of the preseason with 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting and 12 rebounds. But with Eric Gordon, Jabari Smith Jr. and Daishen Nix out and Jae’Sean Tate limited by a sore ankle to five minutes, the Rockets’ backups were blasted by the Heat backups much of the night.The Rockets averaged a league-high 16.5 turnovers last season. They stayed below that number on Monday.
The Rockets eventually cut back on the turnovers late in the first half and in the third quarter. But they often seemed to be pressing when the Heat made runs, forcing low-percentage passes at times they needed to be most precise. When the Rockets built a 16-point first-quarter lead, Green had 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. He finished with 25 points, five assists, and seven rebounds in his 28 minutes.While Green aggressively looked for his shot, Kevin Porter Jr. was assertive but more judicious, while every bit as effective. He generally looked to set up teammates either on pick-and-roll runs to the rim or off his own drives to open 3s.
Rockets assistant coach John Lucas kept them together more than in the first two games. It looked like a combination that could do some work when pushed to regular-season 36 minutes. They both scored 20 points or more in nine of last season’s final 19 games after both reached 20 in the same game once in the first 63 games of the season.
