What to watch: Cate Blanchette is a mesmerizing force in ‘Tar’
One of the year’s most challenging and best films of the year hits Bay Area theaters this week, while a potential contender for best international feature plays in select theaters before zipping off to Netflix.Filmmaker Todd Field’s first feature in 16 years is as challenging, unconventional and complicated as its formidable lead character, acclaimed Berlin Philharmonic conductor and world-renowned composer Lydia Tár .
Lydia’s position in the artistic community is both cheered and feared; her talent and brilliance are undeniable, but her behavior invites scandal and backlash. Just ask her hardworking assistant Francesca , who is seeking to move forward but is often mistreated by Lydia. It’s only inevitable that Lydia’s vaunted success will be jeopardized by her antics, whether it’s the way she promotes the career of a young musician she fancies or talks to her students at a Juilliard master class.
It’s a minefield of a topic to explore and Field, with poise and humor and a surprising lack of bias, fearlessly gets to the center of it. The anchor of this gorgeously photographed, impeccably acted triumph is Blanchett, and she is both mesmerizing and galvanizing, delivering dramatic flourishes when required but retreating into her warring interior emotions at here and there.
