What should you be aware of as a gun owner in Texas?
With more than 130,000 guns purchased in Texas, the Lone Star state is one of many in the US that has a popular gun culture.
'I mean, we love to carry them. We love to be able to say that we have the Second Amendment that is part of our DNA' said Alex Del Carmen who is the dean of the school of criminology at Tarleton State University and the director of the Institute for Predictive Analytics in Criminal Justice Guns have a complex and nuanced history in the state, and while we won't speculate or politicize gun use we will explore the responsibilities that come with owning a firearm, such as proper training and safe handling.
Chief Jimmy Perdue of the North Richland Hills Police Department and the president of the Texas Police Chiefs Association gave us his perspective on the importance of gun safety. 'It is a very significant mental exercise to choose to use a weapon in any situation. And when people don't think about that ahead of time, when they don't go through at least an introduction of, you know, this is what could happen.' he said.
Host Baylee Friday also talked to Leigh Richardson, the founder of the Brain Performance Center in Dallas about the mental aspects of potentially using a gun.
