In a speech broadcast to the British nation, King Charles III announces Prince William and Kate Middleton's titles will change to “The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge,” making Princess Catherine the first Princess of Wales since Princess Diana.
On September 9, King Charles III made an announcement concerning his eldest son, Prince William: He would now be known as the Prince of Wales. “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given,” he said in a speech broadcast to the British nation.
Yet these name changes represent broader shifts in the royal hierarchy as well. As of 2016, the queen represented more than 600 organizations. Throughout the past five years, she’s handed off a significant number of them to other remembers of her family. However—especially with the departure of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the removal of Prince Andrew from royal duties—countless appointments will now go to Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate.
Prince Charles also confirmed that his son “will undertake the responsibilities of the Duchy of Cornwall.” The Duchy of Cornwall is a working 150,000-acre estate in England complete with its own organic food company—and a multimillion dollar income. The revenue from the Duchy pays for much of the private expenses of the royal family, including wardrobes.
With no formal responsibilities given to them by Parliament, the Prince and Princess of Wales will play a hand in crafting their own public identities. However, one thing is certain: Their role on the world stage has just grown larger.
