Hugo Weaving portrayed the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, but the legendary villain had a very unusual fate in the MCU's Phase 1.
Captain America's first MCU villain, the Red Skull, had a very unusual fate in Captain America: The First Avenger. Hugo Weaving debuted as Johann Schmidt in Captain America: The First Avenger, adapting the character who made his first Marvel Comics appearance back in 1941's Captain America Comics #7.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Captain America: The First Avenger introduced Schmidt as the head of HYDRA, the Nazi's science division during WWII. After subjecting himself to a prototype of Dr. Abraham Erskine's original super-soldier serum, Schmidt was left with a disfigured red face, earning the name Red Skull.
Red Skull Was Teleported To Vormir By The Tesseract Though Captain America: The First Avenger made it appear as though the Red Skull was transported through space by the Tesseract, his destination wasn't revealed until Avengers: Infinity War. Once the Mad Titan Thanos and his adoptive daughter Gamora journey to Vormir to acquire the Soul Stone in Infinity War, the pair is met by a ghostly apparition who reveals himself as the aged form of the Red Skull.
Red Skull's return in Avengers: Infinity War came as a shock to MCU audiences, as the character had seemingly been forgotten after disappearing in 1945. The Walking Dead's Ross Marquand portrayed Red Skull in Infinity War, displaying a more humble and reserved version of the character.
Why Red Skull Became The Soul Stone's Guardian & What Happened After Infinity War It's implied that the Tesseract cast the Red Skull out as punishment for thinking he could control the Infinity Stones in Captain America: The First Avenger, forcing him to spend eternity guarding a stone he could never acquire - as he loves nobody.
