In their final moments, Texas death row inmates are allowed to express any last words that they may have. Some decline, but others share feelings of love, regret, anger, sadness and readiness.
After they are gone, their statements are transcribed and reviewed by Texas Department of Criminal Justice staff members and made public. The Houston Chronicle has compiled these statements from all 574 people put to death by the state since 1976. Read the last words people chose to leave behind.
