Westfield is no stranger to playing in December. They’re going to need the same defensive effort against unbeaten Duncanville in a Region II-6A Division I final at 3 p.m. Saturday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. “I’ve been here for a long time, there’s a lot of people who come through this program who set the foundation,” Black said. “There’s a lot of pride in this school, in this program, and I’m just happy to be a part of it. We’re just going to continue to do what we do and have fun doing it, enjoy each other while we do it.”
Going into the 2021 season, Black knew the loss of experienced playmakers, like former defensive tackle Anthony Holmes, who de-committed from Virginia and later signed with Houston, was going to be troublesome. At the same time, the Mustangs had some young talent up front. The Mustangs held five opponents to 10 or fewer points during the regular season, including three shutouts, and are holding opponents to 17 points per game in the postseason. Black said they’re simply getting more comfortable and confident.
