Two men are charged with accessing the systems and placing bogus phone calls to police across the country.
Two men were indicted on suspicion of a “swatting” scheme in which they’re accused of gaining access to Ring cameras, placing fake calls to police and livestreaming the events on social media — including a case in West Covina.
The FBI is investigating the swatting calls, which are pranks played on emergency services officials, or law officers. Kya Christian Nelson, 21, of Racine, Wisconsin, and James Thomas Andrew McCarty, 20, of Charlotte, North Carolina, were each charged with one count of conspiracy to intentionally access computers without authorization, the U.S. Department of Justice reported Monday, Dec. 19. Nelson was also charged with two counts of intentionally accessing a computer without authorization and two counts of aggravated identify theft. The duo was indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles.
From Nov. 7 to Nov. 13, 2020, the two got access to the home-security door cameras, a DOJ news release states.
