Medicare should eliminate arbitrary documentation requirements and adopt a standardized, clear template to document the medical necessity of home respiratory therapy for patients.

The end of the COVID-19 public health emergency poses a slew of questions for patients and health care providers alike, particularly in the field of home respiratory therapy, which cares for millions of Americans living with respiratory diseases. In Pennsylvania alone, for example, there areAt the onset of the pandemic, Medicare worked to protect this vulnerable population by waiving a number of documentation requirements for home oxygen therapy providers.

During the PHE, Medicare audits were waived, and paperwork requirements were loosened, enabling the home respiratory therapy provider community to expand vital access to oxygen treatments that kept at-risk patients out of the hospital at a time when health care resources were stretched thin. Come May 11, Medicare should streamline documentation requirements for home oxygen therapy—as well as clarify that patients who were approved for oxygen treatments during the PHE are still eligible to receive them.

With physicians stretched thin and nursing workforce shortages mounting, how can we realistically expect our healthcare system to support the timely reevaluation of 1 million people?
