Almira Elementary School aims to develop boys' minds and mold them into well-rounded people with its after-school boys program.
Almira Elementary's after-school boys' program, led by Mr. Eric Beal, strives to help mold boys into well-rounded people. Photo by John KuntzCLEVELAND, Ohio – A big question hangs over the group of six boys, sitting in Almira Elementary School’s planning center on this late afternoon. It’s a question powerful enough to throw many adults into an existential crisis.
Fifth-grader Ronnie, who loves basketball and boasts a solid jump shot, says he wants to be a pro player when he grows up -- to make money and be famous. Mr. Beal isn’t out to dismantle any of the boys’ dreams. He actually aims to do the opposite. He wants them to think more about their dreams and realize the paths they’ll need to take for success.
He heads over to his Clevertouch smart board, waxing poetic about the classic metaphor of the ocean’s surface and what’s below. He knows the kids realize that Curry is a great basketball player, but he wants them to understand the unknowns and the depths behind Curry’s – or any other successful person’s – greatness.
Some of his sessions have included teaching about finances, instructing the boys on the details of how to maintain a checking account, savings account and credit. This school year he’s also had sessions on leadership skills and social emotional learning.
