Vice President Kamala Harris issued a video message on Saturday exclusively for readers of ELLE magazine on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade.
Harris called abortion"a fundamental right for women to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do."Today, on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. “My concern is that so many women are silently suffering, and we want to make sure that we’re reaching out to let folks know that we’re not gonna judge them. We want them to know that they exist in a country where there is care and compassion and an acknowledgment of the right of each woman to make decisions for herself,” Harris said.
The Biden administration chose North Carolina for the vice president's one-year anniversary speech to make a statement about the state's upcoming ban on most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy starting July 1. The Republican-controlled General Assembly overrode the veto by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper last month. The new law does make exceptions for incest, rape, and in cases where the health of the mother is at risk.“I think on this issue, it’s really important to also just remember: You don’t have to abandon your faith or your deeply held beliefs to agree that the government should not be telling a woman what to do,” Harris told the ELLE magazine audience.
ELLE magazine previously featured Harris on the cover of their November 2020 magazine when she was still the Democratic vice presidential candidate.
