Artist Lakey Hinson makes a rainbow chalk art piece dedicated to Pride Month at Gorrell Memorial Park in San Antonio on Thursday afternoon, June 15, 2023. The artist was arrested while doing public art on a sidewalk in Leon Valley last month.It was about to rain, so Lakey Hinson figured it was time to wrap up his lively floral chalk design on the sidewalk beside a busy Bandera Road.
Chalk is a substance children use to etch boxes on the sidewalk to play hopscotch. Rain washes it away. Hinson says,"It's freedom of expression to create on public property." He says he’s been arrested for this kind of thing three times before only to win in court."What am I doing wrong, man?" Hinson asks."I'm creating, and it's about to rain and wash it all away." He bends over and goes back to drawing on the sidewalk. Breton tells him to stop, and Hinson stands back up, saying,"This is impermanent, man.
