NEW YORK – They blew another lead. They ran out of relievers. They had to listen to New York, New York play them right off the field to end their road trip. A...

, was gone in the sixth after Harrison Bader lined a double at 106 mph. Bochy turned to his highest-leverage relief option, sudden star Josh Sborz, to quell that rally. In the eighth, Bochy went to John King, who seems to have at least temporarily surpassed Brock Burke in the lefty pecking order. King has been successful lately by getting ground balls, but two nights after he threw four straight fastballs to No. 8 hitter Anthony Volpe, he fell behind Volpe 2-0 with more fastballs.

But King lacked command. He fell behind Jose Trevino, who was trying to bunt, and Gleyber Torres. It left Bochy no choice but to turn the ball over to Yerry Rodriguez, making just the eighth appearance of his career. Bader doubled home both Volpe and Trevino, who reached on an infield single. Giancarlo Stanton, who spent most of the weekend being booed by the home crowd at Yankee Stadium, added a run-scoring single.

It highlighted what has been a problem all year for the Rangers: There simply isn’t enough depth in the bullpen. The back end of the 40-man roster is clogged with the remnants of what the Rangers were a year ago: A noncontending team trying to hoard talent in hopes it doesn’t go elsewhere and find the answers.

When the Rangers run into a pitching shortage in the majors, there isn’t much to pick from on the 40. The relievers there: Taylor Hearn, Spencer Howard and Jonathan Hernandez, all of whom were sent down after poor performances. They have combined to allow 28 runs in 29 innings in the majors this year with 16 walks and six homers. There are young relievers not currently on the 40-man roster who are starting to challenge for spots, particularly Marc Church, Alex Speas and Chase Lee.

“You run into games like this where the usage goes up a little bit,” Bochy said. “The last time [Rodriguez] was up, he threw the ball very well. You’re trying to get out of that, and he just made some mistakes and started getting the ball up. It’s a tough spot to put him in. I understand that. But this is about learning about him, too.”. But what really matters now are wins. And they walked away with just one in New York.
