More than almost literally anybody else that has come through the franchise, Klay Thompson has earned the opportunity to stumble for as long as he needs to.
The honeymoon phase of post-injury Klay feels like it’s rapidly winding down. Maybe that’s understandable, but it’s not remotely fair. As he himself will remind you, it’s like the world is determined to forget he just helped Golden State win its fourth championship in eight years!
But we don’t have to go over his accomplishments ad nauseum, his bona fides. He’s the most known quantity there is. It’s goofy and hyperbolic, but nonetheless true: Thompson has given everything to this franchise. For years, he was the Teflon Splash Brother. When thestruggled, blame could be ladled on Kerr’s rotations or Curry’s passivity or Draymond Green’s volcanic eruptions or this, that and the other thing.
Taken one at a time, there’s not anything particularly damning about Thompson’s last week or so. In what sick world is it a moral failing to get frustrated at Devin Booker during a blowout loss? It’s even poetic: Klay Thompson has long existed as Steph Curry’s Luigi, and in Devin Booker he has found his Waluigi, the dark replica, a stoic gunner cut from the same freakish cloth.
And speaking of corny, Charles Barkley is like a shark sniffing chum when it comes to Golden State. Barkley’s comments about Thompson “slipping” were more or less within the realm of acceptable punditry. It wasn’t mean-spirited, exactly, though it felt unnecessary. There ought to be nothing controversial about noting that an NBA player on the wrong side of 30 returning from two consecutive season-ending injuries isn’t exactly the same anymore.
