Candidates in the District 4 special election will have a one-week window starting Tuesday to make their campaigns official.
Would-be candidates hoping to run for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors’ vacant seat representing District 4 have a narrow, little-publicized window to get on the ballot during a one-week nomination period that starts Tuesday., who stepped down last week. The choice will be put to voters August 15, with a possible runoff on Nov. 7 if no candidate earns a majority of votes.
To qualify for the ballot, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen who has been registered to vote in District 4 for at least 30 days before the filing deadline, and must live in the district while in office, according toAlthough the special election dates were announced when the board declared plans to hold it earlier this month, the nomination period was not announced until after supervisors finalized their plan this week, and is not listed on a widely publicized list of election dates.
The filing fee to run is $2,080.57, or 1 percent of supervisors’ $208,057 salary, and candidates must also include 20 to 40 nomination signatures. There is also a $3,675 fee for candidates to place a 200-word statement of qualifications describing their background and experience on the ballot pamphlet. That’s also due June 6.
