Volunteers clean up overgrown Fort Bend cemetery of former slaves, first Black Texas lawmaker

Allen Park in Kendleton.Benjamin Franklin Williams was born into slavery in 1819. In 1870, five years after his emancipation, Williams became the first Black member of the Texas House of Representatives, according to the Texas Legislator Archives.

“I was appalled when I came out here,” the former Republican lawmaker said. “How could we let this happen? It took me 20 minutes to get his tombstone out from being embedded in the soil, and I knew we just had to do better.” Volunteer Bianca Scialabba was working at the Katy Heritage Museum when she learned of the cemetery cleanup.
