In 2023, veterans can change their spousal survivor benefits so their loved ones receive a pension after the retiree dies — it’s the first, and for now only, year such a change is possible.
Prior to 2023, veterans’ decisions were permanent, but this year, they will have an opportunity to opt in or opt out. Enrolled members pay 6.5% of their retirement pay into this fund for the survivor benefit plan. Some veterans choose not to enroll, as similar to other insurances, it isn’t guaranteed the spouse will ever use it .
