Running back Rocko Griffin, who started his college career at Vanderbilt, has indicated he will join UTSA as part of the ongoing transfer process.As programs across the country were less than 36 hours from signing the first members of their 2023 recruiting classes, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor sent a tweet that captured the attention of the college football world.
Though programs are prohibited from contacting players rostered at other schools prior to their entering the transfer portal and NIL opportunities are not allowed to be used as recruiting inducements, Traylor added fuel to the speculation that such behavior is rampant across college football. Roadrunners freshmen standouts running back Kevorian Barnes and linebacker Trey Moore are most likely to end up in the crosshairs.
Traylor said Kendre Miller, No. 3 TCU’s leader with 1,342 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns this season, was in line to sign with UTSA in the class of 2020 until “the night before signing day.” Savion Williams, a junior receiver for the Horned Frogs with 392 yards and four touchdowns this year, also was offered by UTSA before any other school, Traylor said.
“I can’t tell you how many kids that might chase the Power Fives, that get up there and realize it’s a lot colder than they thought,” Traylor said. “It’s a lot further away from home than they thought. They miss mom. They miss Texas. They miss the relationships they have with us, and we get them back on the second time around.
After running backs Brenden Brady and Trelon Smith exhausted their eligibility and Tye Edwards entered the transfer portal, UTSA landed the commitment of transfer running back Rocko Griffin from Vanderbilt. Appearing in 22 games across three seasons, including six starts in 2021, Griffin compiled 695 rushing yards with five touchdowns.
