UTSA linebackers Trevor Harmanson, Jamal Ligon evolving their leadership through spring practice

UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said Ligon and Harmanson provide a calming influence — a needed asset as the Roadrunners look to use spring practice to replace veterans and proven leaders at outside linebacker and on the defensive line. Harmanson arrived at UTSA from Blinn College in 2019 and quickly became a stalwart, ranking as one of the team’s three leading tacklers each of the past three seasons.
Returning for an extra year of eligibility in 2022, Harmanson said his main goals were finishing his degree in multidisciplinary studies this spring and addressing “some of the off-the-field things I have to improve on.” Traylor describes Ligon as a leader by example but also an improving communicator. Ligon’s style is similar to departed defensive tackle Jaylon Haynes, Traylor said, who also was selective with his words but commanded attention whenever he spoke.
