The University of Utah softball team routed San Diego State 10-1 on Saturday in an NCAA Super Regional series, forcing a decisive Game 3 on Sunday in Salt Lake City.
Utah found its offense in a big way in a 10-1 rout of the San Diego State Aztecs in Game 2 of the NCAA Softball Super Regionals on Saturday at Dumke Family Stadium. The winner-take-all Game 3 is Sunday at a time to be determined.Third baseman Julia Jimenez hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning. In the fifth, Shelby Ortiz hit a three-run homer.
Ellessa Bonstrom hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, adding to her program-leading RBI total. It was her 11th home run of the 2023 season and 46th of her career. After the Utes built a 10-1 lead through five and innings, Lopez left the game and was replaced by reliever Sarah Ladd. Lopez struck out two in four innings and allowed for hits.
Utah tallied only four hits all of Friday. It had four after two innings on Saturday, and ended with 13. Ortiz’s RBI double gave the Utes a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Abby Dayton singled with two outs and designated hitter Sophie Jacquez tried to slide home, but was tagged by SDSU catcher Cali Decker.This story will be updated.
