He's now urging people to pay attention to the symptoms of stroke and to seek treatment fast at the first sign of symptoms. During the legislative session earlier this year, Sen. Thatcher worried his colleagues when he appeared to be suffering a medical condition during a tense debate in the Utah State Senate. He insists the high-profile incident was overstated.

More and more people under the age of 50 are having strokes, but fewer people are dying from them, said Liv Sasaki, the executive director of the American Heart Association of Utah.
