The United States is intensifying its intervention in the internal politics of Latin American countries. In Bolivia, the arrest of key judicial officials follows the revocation of visas, while in Argentina, the Supreme Court expedites controversial land rulings amid government pressures. This pattern of external influence threatens to undermine regional sovereignty and democratic stability.
This Friday, the former director of the US National Security Council, Nick Zimmerman, asserted that if Lula wins the elections, Trump will not recognize the result.
La interferencia estadounidense en Bolivia
Simultaneously, the US suspended consular activities in Brazil 'for security reasons', exhibiting total interference by Washington, not only in Bolivia, in the Argentine elections, and in the Argentine Supreme Court, but also in the Brazilian elections. Institutional coup in Bolivia... The prosecutor Roger Mariaca led the investigations that sent Fernando Cerimedo, former advisor to Javier Milei and the Bolivian president, Rodrigo Paz, to prison. Attempted femicide, illicit enrichment, and bribes for drug-transporting planes led Cerimedo to the Chonchocoro prison.
Amid the investigation, the US government revoked Mariaca's visa and that of other judicial officials, in a clear maneuver to defend its man, Cerimedo. 48 hours later, without a judicial case existing in either Bolivia or the US, Mariaca, two other prosecutors, and 11 officials were arrested by government order. No judicial authority intervened. The Minister of Government thanked the American DEA, making it clear that the arrests were decided in Washington.
Hours later, Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Paz and evaluated the decision to detain Mariaca as 'bold measures'. The following day, countries governed by the right in Latin America also supported Paz and stated that the framework for the actions was proposed by the 'Shield of the Americas', meaning the agreement between Trump and those governments. This Friday, Vice President Edmand Lara, opposed to Paz, denounced that his arrest was being prepared based on false evidence.
El Shield of Americas y la presión diplomática
Lara had released audios where Cerimedo was heard negotiating 15,000 dollars per 'carro' (Bolivian slang for drug plane). The potential arrest of Lara would be a direct coup d'état. Both former president Evo Morales and Cerimedo's ex-partner and victim, Nadia Beller, indicated that everything happening demonstrated that the US is governing Bolivia.
In the session of the Plurinational Assembly, the neighboring country's congress, where Mariaca was unconstitutionally removed (since there is no final ruling), the media detected the presence of representatives from the embassies of the US, Argentina, and Peru, pressuring legislators. There are even reports of payments. Among them, Hermes Grullón, a State Department worker, was identified distributing QR codes to Bolivian legislators for personal meetings and to condition their votes. Another demonstration that orders come from the north.
La foreignización de tierras en Argentina
The Court with Stars and Stripes... Between August 6 and 7, the Milei government withdrew the chapter regarding the foreignization of lands from the law falsely referred to private property. In that same month, on August 31, the draft ruling that the 3 supremes would sign less than 4 weeks later began circulating in the Court.
The case had been on the fourth floor of the courts since March 2024 and was only pulled out of the drawer when Milei got stuck in Congress. Just in time. And with a shameless argument: the CECIM veterans were told that 'sovereignty is not a collective good to be defended'.
The Court had 30 other files questioning decree 70/2023, but chose only this one to rush out, violating popular sovereignty, which had already made clear in the Senate that the norm on foreignization of lands was not passing.
