Ann Hamilton's 'Kahnop: To Tell a Story' is a massive pathway of stone bricks with raised and engraved words drawn from 1,300 documents
After five years of planning, research and construction, world-renowned Ohio-based artist Ann Hamilton’s “Kahnop: To Tell a Story” public art piece will be unveiled to the public this weekend at the University of California San Diego.
Artist Ann Hamilton walks on “Kahnop: To Tell a Story” at UC San Diego. She created the basalt stone brick walkway that feature words from 1,300 written works by UCSD scholars. “It was a natural choice to share the life of Sinyahow, the first woman, and the essence of what she brings to Kumeyaay women,” Trujillo and Hunter said, in a statement. “Her story is our story, and the events of her life have shaped ceremonies, oral traditions and cultural lifeways of the Kumeyaay people.”
