The newly reorganized improv and sketch school plans to start running shows again this fall.
who announced their intention to rebuild the once extremely powerful comedy institution. It now appears they are set to deliver on that promise, as UCB gears up to open a brand-new theater space on 14th Street in Manhattan this fall.
While UCB’s Franklin Theater in L.A. was the only physical location to survive the pandemic closures , New York, the city where the group was originally founded, has remained without a fixed venue for UCB shows, even as in-person classes resumed. The news of the new venue was announced Wednesday night at a community happy hour organized by UCB N.Y.’s three artistic directors, Michael Hartney, Iliana Inocencio, and Laura Canty-Samuel.
The new space will include three floors, and there are plans to add a lift to make the space ADA-compliant. The ground floor will include a coffee bar, hangout space, and small performance area Hartney says will likely be used for class shows, auditions, and rehearsal space. A mezzanine level will have a bar and “restrooms that are so big it’s crazy,” while the basement will house the main theater.
According to Hartney, there aren’t currently plans to rent out the space to other shows or events, and the intention is to program seven nights a week of UCB shows. To that end, the company beginning in August for its house improv , sketch , and character teams. “Everyone seemed really excited about it [at the happy hour],” Hartney said. “I think our homecoming is gonna be really special.”
