The pilot of the jet was able to eject safely before it crashed while trying to land on the USS Carl Vinson, reports say.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is shown off the coast of Hawaii in July 2018. The U.S. military says a Navy combat jet conducting exercises in the South China Sea has crashed while trying to land on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson, injuring seven sailors. BANGKOK — Seven U.S. Navy sailors were injured Monday when a fighter jet attempting to land on an aircraft carrier crashed.

A news release from the United States Pacific Fleet says the F-35C Lightning II had a “landing mishap” on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the South China Sea. The pilot of the jet ejected before the plane crashed and was recovered from the water by a helicopter. The pilot was in stable condition in a hospital, according to the news release. Three sailors required MEDEVAC to a medical treatment facility in Manila, Philippines, and were in stable condition. Four were treated by on-board medical personnel.

Three of the four sailors treated on the USS Vinson have been released from the hospital, the news release says.
