Humans have converted more than 70% of Earth's ice-free land area in their quest for food and natural resources, including everything from sand to fossil fuels.Such resource extraction has left waters polluted, soils eroded, mountain slopes destabilized and crop yields diminished. Roughly half of the global economy, or about $44 trillion a year, relies on land cultivation or resource extraction.
