The Biden administration had spent weeks lobbying other countries to support the measure as part of its pressure campaign against the Islamist regime in Tehran following its crackdown on protests following the September death of a young woman detained by Iran’s “morality police.” The vote was held by the 54 members of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It removes Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women, a body overseen by the council.
