Two women were found dead in a West Side apartment after San Antonio firefighters extinguished a blaze there early Thursday morning.
Crews were called to the 4700 block of Eldridge Avenue just after 3 a.m. after a neighbor smelled smoke coming from the downstairs apartment. The neighbor had a key and entered the apartment, where she found two women on the floor, officials at the scene said. When firefighters arrived, the apartment was filled with heavy fire and smoke, San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington said. The fire was briefly upgraded to a second alarm, but it was canceled shortly after.Emergency medical personnel performed life-saving measures to revive the women, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.The case is under investigation, and arson investigators have been called in to determine the cause of the fire.
