The pair, believed to be two males aged at least 55, are believed to have been killed as an earthquake knocked down a wall in a room where they sought shelter. One skeleton had an arm raised as if in defense. 2 new skeletons found at Pompeii excavations:
Archaeologists at Pompeii said Tuesday that they had uncovered two new skeletons of male victims who likely died in an earthquake that accompanied the devastating volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the Italian city in ash in AD 79.
The earthquake struck as the huge blast from nearby Mount Vesuvius covered the city of Pompeii with thick volcanic ash, preserving the bodies of many of its residents. They were found in what is believed to be a storeroom inside the "Chaste Lovers" block, where colourful frescoes and the skeletons of mules who worked the millstones for grain have been uncovered in the past.
"Among the causes of death, the collapse of buildings, in some cases due to earthquakes that accompanied the eruption, proved to be a lethal threat," the park said.Pompeii's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said modern technology was helping archaeologists "better understand the hell that completely destroyed the city of Pompeii in two days, killing many inhabitants: children, women and men".

Skeletons found in Pompeii ruins reveal deaths by eathquake, not just Vesuvius' ancient eruptionArcheologists in Pompeii have discovered two skeletons that they believe were men who died when a wall collapsed on them during the powerful earthquakes that accompanied the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Experts said Tuesday that the find underlines that many of the dead in the ancient city were due to powerful quakes that accompanied the eruption and not just victims of the volcano’s deadly ash and gas. The two skeletons were found in the insula of the Casti Amanti beneath a wall that collapsed before the area was covered in volcanic material. The director of the Pompeii archaeological site said new techniques are allowing experts to determine the dynamics of deaths down to the final seconds.
