ARLINGTON – Who could blame Mark Mathias if he actually thought he was dreaming? With a 25-hour day behind him and on virtually no sleep, it was entirely...
“Adrenaline is a real thing,” Mathias said after the game. “And to look over and see Marcus playing next to me, a guy who was a role model for me, it was crazy. Just amazing. And you come off the field after a shutdown inning and know you are coming to bat, yeah, you think you could be the guy to end it, one swing.”
Sounds like a dream. Then again, the last six weeks must have felt like that for Mathias. He was in the minor leagues with Milwaukee when the Rangers sent Matt Bush to the Brewers in exchange for him and pitching prospect Antoine Kelly. He spent another two weeks at Round Rock before the Rangers called him up in the carousel of mid-August moves.
Sometimes the dreams were bizarre, too. He was called up in the two-day window between the firings of manager Chris Woodward and president of baseball operations Jon Daniels, the guy who, ostensibly traded for him. All he’s done in the month since: Make a fine impression on those who will decide if he figures into their future. The Rangers are heavy with utility infield candidates. Mathis, 15 for 41 with four homers, since his callup is letting his performance make a case for him.
“He’s given us a ton of quality at-bats,” interim manager Tony Beasley said. “You can trust his at-bats. He controls the strike zone. He uses the whole field. He makes pitchers work.”
