Tupperware Brands has churned out kitchen gear for years but it has been hurt by steep revenue declines and a shrinking sales force.

Inspired by paint-can lids, New Hampshire chemist Earl Tupper invented Tupperware in 1946. The airtight plastic containers that closed with a "burp" were designed to help families save money in the postwar era by preserving leftovers.At first, Tupperware didn’t do well in stores. Customers didn’t know how to use them. Brownie Wise, a secretary and single mother, began selling the products to groups at home parties. Earl Tupper soon hired Wise to develop a sales network.
