this week. It runs through Jan. 29, with virtual and in-person presentations wrapped around a theme of censorship.
San Antonio Public Library Director Ramiro Salazar, who conceptualized the initiative with Nestel and helped develop it through a partnership between the city and the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio, said it teaches students and adults to “speak up when one witnesses hate.”“It’s a very important initiative, especially today” amid “a lot of division on our country,” Salazar said. “We still see and experience incidents and expressions of hate or intolerance.
“I have a deep belief … that every person deserves to live in dignity. And unfortunately, on the walls of this museum, you can see some of the most obscene ways that humanity has gone in the other direction,” Nirenberg said, focusing his comments on propaganda and censorship used by the Nazi Party in the early phase of World War II to justify mass genocide.
State Sen. José Menéndez, who sponsored legislation that passed in 2019 encouraging Holocaust education in Texas schools, said the state has a responsibility to teach young people to “uphold all human value.”
