Fiona is expected to spread heavy rain and damaging winds across Puerto Rico, and forecasters are particularly concerned about the threat of flash flooding and mudslides in the higher terrain areas.

Sep. 17, 2022, 4:23 p.m.Tropical Storm Fiona could become a hurricane as it passes just to the south of Puerto Rico this weekend. The island could have to deal with flash flooding and mudslides from the storm. It's too soon to say for sure Fiona will miss the U.S. but the path begins to curve more to the north next week.Tropical Storm Fiona could become a hurricane sooner than thought, and a hurricane warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, which is next in the storm’s path.

The storm is expected to move into slightly better conditions for strengthening in the next day or two, and the National Hurricane Center said that Fiona is now expected to be a hurricane strength when it passes near Puerto Rico Sunday and Sunday night. The hurricane center said there was more uncertainty than usual in the short-term forecast track. Forecasters are seeing signs that the center of the storm has reformed farther to the east. But don’t just follow the center of the storm, the hurricane center warned: “The caveat to this forecast is that additional center re-formations could cause models to shift again, and therefore there’s quite a bit of uncertainty in the short-term track forecast,” the hurricane center said.

As of 4 p.m. CDT Saturday, Tropical Storm Fiona was located about 70 miles south of St. Croix and was tracking to the west-northwest at 9 mph.
