The system is expected to become a modest hurricane west of the southern tip of Baja California late Sunday, throwing off moisture that could reach Southern California.
Tropical Storm Eugene has moved west of the southern tip of Baja California and is expected to evolve into a category one hurricane late Sunday, possibly affecting the weather in San Diego County later in the week.
The system was packing 70 mph winds Sunday morning, just below the 74-95 mph range of a category one hurricane. Eugene was about 800 miles south of San Diego at the time. Forecasters say Eugene will continue to move west-northwest, flinging off moisture that will flow toward Southern California.“We could get clouds or thunderstorms in San Diego County on Wednesday,” said Casey Oswant, a forecaster at the National Weather Service.
It’s also possible that Eugene will increase wave heights along the coast, especially in Oceanside and San Onofre. But the strongest wave energy will roll ashore in northern Orange County.
