The first hurricane of the 2023 season began as Tropical Storm Don in the Atlantic Ocean Saturday.
Don is not expected to make landfall per the National Hurricane Center as it sits over 480 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Other than that, the center reports a 40% chance of a separate cyclone forming south in the Atlantic Ocean.
Last year, Hurricane Danielle was the first hurricane of the season on Sept 1. The season before that, the first hurricane of the season was Claudette on June 17."Hurricanes are powerhouse weather events that suck heat from tropical waters to fuel their fury," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains on its website.
